“Given our interest in the allostatic interoception processes that integrate external (exposome) and internal (interoceptive) needs and challenges, we investigated the intricate interplay between social or environmental factors and biological factors in influencing brain health and the onset of dementia in LAC countries, encompassing research on healthy individuals and those with dementia and other disorders”, explains Ibanez.

The team used cross-sectional and longitudinal survey data from nationally representative cohorts in LAC countries at different levels of economic development to assess several potential risk factors of cognitive and functional decline. These included demographic (age and sex), social (including poverty, education and social inclusion), health (including cardiometabolic risks and falls), mental health and lifestyle (including physical activity, smoking and alcohol consumption) factors.
