More severe vascular pathologies can be caused by well-recognized coding variations in genes associated with collagen production and TGFβ signaling. In contrast, common genetic variants of SLC25A51, by affecting type III collagen turnover, lead to slowly progressive vascular pathology, which worsen with concurrent conditions such as hypertension.
