The classification is based on local streamflow and soil moisture deviation frequency increases shown in Fig. 3, and it pools together both minor and major increases (represented by ‘+(+)’ in the legend). Computing the percentage of land area with local deviations (Fig. 1c) was performed within each region, and the median and upper end of pre-industrial variability (Fig. 1d) were also computed regionally. Selected region outlines are derived from the HydroBASINS data set97.
