The red distributions represent prediction errors, and green distributions represent predictions. Higher levels encode more domain general, complex abstractions (i.e., high-level beliefs). Lower levels, such as the sensory cortex, encode simpler and domain-specific concepts (i.e., low levels, such as edge detectors172). High levels send descending predictions, while prediction errors ascend the hierarchy until they are explained away by higher levels. Insights (i.e., prediction errors) arrived at during the trip are afforded higher precision due to decreased precision weighting of priors, rendering insights and consequent beliefs higher precision thereafter — a process that we have termed FIBUS.
