The northern Gulf is divided into 10 × 10 km grid cells, with the settled MPs tallied within each cell for all simulations conducted from 2014 to 2016. a1–a2) Spatial distribution of settled MPs originating from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). b1–b2) Spatial distribution of settled MPs originating from rivers. The three yellow boxes in Fig. 1a2 indicate distinct accumulation areas for MPs sourced from WWTPs. From west to east, these areas are the western Texas shelf shoreline, the region east of the Mississippi Delta, and the western Florida shoreline.
