(a) A wire rock basket, covered by further rocks, is used to support the metal scaffold pole (Orne Harbour, Antarctic Peninsula); (b) multiple metal “legs” are fastened to the main structure for support; each “foot” is secured using rocks (Aitcho Islands, South Shetland Islands, Antarctic Peninsula). The design shown in (b) is favoured for future constructions as the “legs” provide increased stability and are longer-lasting than the wire used in (a), which becomes brittle after approximately three years.
