(a), The maximum potential tree cover fraction (MPTC). In each climate bin with 0.1°C interval of mean annual temperature and 10 mm interval of annual precipitation, MPTC is estimated by fitting Eq. (1) and Eq. (2) and only shown when the fitting is significant (p < 0.05). (b), The MODIS-derived actual tree cover fraction averaged over 2000–2010. Note that the maximum of the MODIS tree cover fraction across the whole tropics is 87% only. The focal area is the tropical vegetation belt between 35°S and 15°N.
