The energy of the initial state is set to zero. The insets from left to right are the configurations of single (SV) and double vacancies (DV), Stone–Wales defect (SW) and silicene nanomesh. In the nanomesh configuration, one hexagon ring is removed per (5×5) silicene supercell. The dangling Si atoms in the edge of the holes in DV and nanomesh configurations are hydrogenated. The yellow and white balls are Si and H atoms, respectively.
