Structures of 28 peptoids built by varying: 1) the overall peptoid hydrophobicity by (i) varying the aromatic substituent (X) (a, b and d) and (ii) varying the number of hydrophobic groups (d and e), 2) the ability to bind to calcium carbonate through the number of carboxylic acid groups (c, d and e), 3) the ratio of hydrophobic groups to hydrophilic groups (e) and 4) the position of the hydrophobic groups, either as a single block in the N-terminal (b, c and d), in the middle (a and f), or interspersed with the carboxylic acid groups (g).
