V-type three level system with a common ground state |0> and split upper states |X> and |Y>. The optical transitions πX and πY can be distinguished either by polarization selection rules or by energy. A prototype for such a system is the fine structure split single exciton in a quantum dot. For a finite fine structure splitting ΔEFSS, the transitions are linear polarized and orthogonal with respect to each other.
