The intervals were derived from the possible range of metabolic rates for eggs of a given size under a given temperature. Thus, species above the mean prediction have metabolic rates that are below average. Empirical data of the egg size and reproduction temperature for fish species are superimposed. A and C, smooth spherical eggs without parental care; B and D, other eggs, with either parental care, post-fertilization expansion of perivitelline space, or surface ornamentation.
