Neutrophil recruitment and degranulation into the bronchial lumen level off with airway treatment of S-maltoheptaose.

Cigarette smoke-exposed rats (CS, n = 8) were given airway treatment of S-maltoheptaose-on-chitosan carrier beads at the doses indicated. The CS group showed significant increase in neutrophil count (A) and myeloperoxidase (MPO, neutrophil degranulation marker) (B) when compared with basal values of sham air controls (SA, n = 8). In both groups, the increase in basal levels of the SA group were unaffected by airway treatment with the carrier beads with or without loading of S-maltoheptaose. **P < 0.001.
