Single-element SEM-EDX maps of YFGP-T5199 ‘forecrown’ feathers.

White indicates high intensity whereas black indicates low intensity. Note relatively high levels of carbon (C) in the fossil feather material, whereas the sediment is dominated by silica (Si) and oxygen (O), with minor quantities of aluminium (Al) and only trace amounts of iron (Fe). Intensities from calcium (Ca) and fluoride (F) derive from the underlying spectrophotometric window (for IR microspectroscopic analysis). Scale bar: 50 μm.
