(a) HPLC chromatogram comparison of the products from the transformation of 2 g/l of cholesterol in MYC/02 media at 30 °C by strains NwIB-XII (blue), XIIΔfadA5 (red) and XIIΔhsd4A (green). The deletion of hsd4AMN or fadA5 in NwIB-XII greatly changed the metabolic products of cholesterol. Both XIIΔhsd4A and XIIΔfadA5 converted cholesterol to 1,4-HBC (V) and 4-HBC (VI).
