(A) STED image of spiny dendritic segment of a CA1 pyramidal cell. (B) The spatial variance of Cl concentration in stochastic simulations of Cl diffusion in STED-based dendritic morphologies. Note that the spatial variance in spiny dendrites is different from the spatial variance of idealized free (unhindered)Cl diffusion (dotted line). (C) Dapp was determined from spatial variance (c.f. Fig. 1). The ratio of Dapp and DCl of 1 is characteristic for free (unhindered) Cl diffusion. (D) In the presence of spines, the tortuosity was larger than 1 indicating a slower time course of longitudinal dendritic diffusion.
