Models of potential Notch/BMP signaling crosstalk during chondrocyte maturation.

During growth plate development, Notch and BMP signaling begins with the binding of ligands (Jagged1, BMP2 et al.) and receptors, the Notch intracellular domain NICD stabilizes BMP signaling key factor, p-SMAD1/5/8 by inhibition of PPM1A activity. Either NICD or p-SMAD1/5/8 induces cell cycle exit by up-regulation of p57 leading to decreased proliferation and increased differentiation in mature chondrocytes.
