(A–C) The expression patterns of Nodal (A), Lefty1/2 (B), and Pitx2 (C) in E8.0 control and Pierce1−/− embryos were examined by whole-mount in situ hybridization using antisense riboprobes. Expression of the asymmetric genes was randomized in Pierce1−/− embryos. The ratios indicate the numbers of embryos exhibiting each expression pattern. Arrows indicate the detection of transcripts at the LPM. Note down-regulation of Lefty1 expression (arrowheads) in Pierce1−/− embryos. The orientation of the embryos is indicated by R (right) and L (left).
