Only one pair of mirrors for the optical collimator is shown, whereas two pairs are employed in the actual experiment to collimate in two directions. The optical pump laser is propagating in the same direction as the electric field of the ionising laser, which defines the quantisation axis. The magnetic sublevel optical pump apparatus was not used for the results displayed in Fig. 1.
