The influence of prior assumptions on perception.
(a) Most observers perceive the even-numbered faces as convex ridges, in keeping with priors for illumination from above, and viewpoint from above. (b) The right image is more ambiguous – light from above dictates that even numbered ridges are convex, viewpoint from above is consistent with odd ridges being convex (see ref. 23 for similar examples).
