Under hypoxia, fibroblasts are induced to senescence and a cancer associated fibroblast (CAF) phenotype.

These CAFs can secrete miR-210, which induces malignant transformation to the prostate cancer (PC) cells, yielding a more malignant phenotype mediating a poorer prognosis. Figure based on references25,32,35. Abbrevations: EMT = endothelial mesenchymal transformation, PC = Prostate cancer.
