The incoming neutron flux was limited to the area indicated by the dashed rectangle. Neutrons forming images (b) were diffracted by the sample. The numbers (1–3) indicate the areas for which the transmission spectra are shown in (c); numbers (4–10) indicate areas for which the diffraction data are shown in (d) and (e). The dips in spectra (c) and peaks in (d) and (e) indicate that sample N1 is a single crystal.
