Histograms represent spring weight distribution (observable cue), vertical lines and bell-shaped curves show the median and distribution of estimated individual maturation thresholds, and solid lines represent the maturation reaction norm (dashed lines its 95% credibility interval) giving the probability for a male parr to sexually mature as a function of the observable cue computed from equation 7 in ref. 6.
