(b–i) Confocal images of the cross-section of the rectangular spiral microchannel with geometry g1. The images were taken at regular intervals over two loops. These images show a gradual development of secondary vortices in the second loop of the spiral device whereas in the first loop only primary vortices were observed. (j–l) Plot of Area vs. De for the rectangular spiral microchannel geometries, g1, g2 and g3. The blue data points show the area of the channel covered by one of the two primary vortices, and the red data points show the area of the channel covered by one of the two secondary Dean vortices.
