(a,b) SH-SY5Y cells were exposed to 10 and 200 μM MPP+ for up to 48 h or 2.5 and 5 mM MPP+ for up to 24 h; glucose concentrations in the culture media at several time points were measured using a commercial assay kit. (c,d) SH-SY5Y cells were exposed to 10 and 200 μM MPP+ for up to 48 h or 2.5 and 5 mM MPP+ for up to 24 h; extracellular lactate concentrations at several time points were measured using a commercial assay kit. (e,f) SH-SY5Y cells were exposed to 10 and 200 μM MPP+ for 48 h or 2.5 and 5 mM MPP+ for 24 h in the presence of 5.5 mM glucose for the last 12 h. Cell viability was determined using the WST-1 assay. Data are expressed as means ± S.D. from at least three independent experiments. *p < 0.05, **p < 0.01.
