Interface-based tuning of Rashba spin-orbit interaction in asymmetric oxide heterostructures with 3d electrons

The two-dimensional electron gases that form at LaAlO₃/SrTiO₃ heterostructure interfaces feature strong spin-orbit interactions, leading to proposed spintronic applications. Lin et al. show that the design of asymmetric heterostructures enables the Rashba spin-orbit interaction to be tuned between two regimes.

Ultrafast dynamics of exchange stiffness in Co/Pt multilayer

The exchange stiffness coefficient describes the interaction between neighbouring spins of a ferromagnetic system and analysing these interactions at ultrafast timescales can reveal information on their demagnetisation and remagnetisation mechanisms. Here, the authors investigate the ultrafast dynamics of the exchange stiffness coefficient of a ferromagnetic multilayer system and model the data using a generalised three temperature model.

Bias-voltage dependence of perpendicular spin-transfer torque in asymmetric MgO-based magnetic tunnel junctions

Spin-transfer torque allows the magnetization of nanopillar devices to be switched electrically. Incorporating asymmetries into the design of such a device generates a linear out-of-plane torque component that could help prevent the unwanted spontaneous reversal of the nanopillar’s magnetization.

Spin-momentum locking and spin-orbit torques in magnetic nano-heterojunctions composed of Weyl semimetal WTe₂

The Fermi arcs, topological surface states of Weyl semimetals can enable the intriguing spin control and facilitate topological spintronics. Here the authors report the spin-orbit torque at the interface of WTe₂/Py and attribute it to the enhanced spin accumulation by the spin-momentum locking effect of the Fermi arcs of WTe₂.

Spin-to-charge conversion using Rashba coupling at the interface between non-magnetic materials

The inverse spin-Hall effect is important in spintronics as it converts a spin current into charge current in nonmagnetic materials. Here, the authors show signatures of the inverse Rashba–Edelstein effect, a similar effect in two-dimensional interfacial states, in an Ag/Bi bilayer.

Engineering the interaction between spin and charge is important for the creation of spintronics devices. Here, the authors show that the Rashba effect at a single crystalline Fe/Ge(111) interface produces enhanced spin-charge conversion, which could help develop a spin field-effect-transistor.
