Demonstration of a beam loaded nanocoulomb-class laser wakefield accelerator

Higher beam quality and stability are desired in laser-plasma accelerators for their applications in compact light sources. Here the authors demonstrate in laser plasma wakefield electron acceleration that the beam loading effect can be employed to improve beam quality by controlling the beam charge.

Creation and characterization of warm dense matter isochorically heated by an intense laser-driven proton beam to temperatures exceeding 100 eV

Warm dense matter (WDM) is a key state for understanding inertial confinement fusion and planetary interiors, but direct, time-resolved bulk temperature measurements have been scarce. This study demonstrates rapid isochoric heating of solid copper to over 100 eV within 50 ps using a focused, intense laser-driven proton beam, with picosecond-resolved K_α spectroscopy revealing both the temperature evolution and spatial gradients, advancing diagnostics for WDM research.

Extreme ionization of heavy atoms in solid-density plasmas by relativistic second-harmonic laser pulses

Gold atoms were stripped of up to 72 electrons by irradiating gold foils and nanowire arrays with a relativistic 400 nm laser pulse. This work will open the door to the study of the atomic physics of highly charged atoms in very-high-density plasmas.

Relativistic plasma nanophotonics for ultrahigh energy density physics

Femtosecond laser pulses were used to heat dense matter, converting it into an extremely hot plasma. 52-times ionized gold was achieved as well as gigabar pressures, which can be exceeded only in the central hot spots of thermonuclear fusion plasmas.

In a plasma-based accelerator, the amplitude of the plasma wave is constrained by the wavebreaking limit. Experiments reveal features of the plasma waves at the point at which wavebreaking occurs.
