Higa et al. analyzed circulating cells expressing cancer and immune cell markers in breast cancer patients. Based on genomic and protein expression profiling, they show that the cells were unlike previously described circulating tumor cells with immune-like phenotypes because they did not appear to arise from heterotypical cell fusion.
