  • Materials with a Kitaev spin liquid ground state are sought after as models of quantum phases but candidates so far form either zig-zag or incommensurate magnetic order.   • External perturbations can induce 3D charge order in cuprates, but the 3D correlation length is limited and the mechanism is not well understood.   • A new form of charge ordering is observed in a cuprate superconductor. At low doping, a fully rotationally symmetric ordering appears before becoming locked to the Cu–O bond directions at high doping. The link between charge correlations and fermiology give a perspective on the phase diagram.
