Sustained HIV-1 remission after heterozygous CCR5Δ32 stem cell transplantation

HIV remission of more than 6 years was achieved in a patient with functional viral co-receptors after CCR5 wild-type/Δ32 allogeneic stem cell transplantation, providing evidence of other mechanisms that can be harnessed to attain long-term remission.

HLA class I signal peptide polymorphism determines the level of CD94/NKG2–HLA-E-mediated regulation of effector cell responses

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-E binds epitopes derived from HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C and HLA-G signal peptides (SPs) and serves as a ligand for CD94/NKG2A and CD94/NKG2C receptors. Carrington and colleagues provide comprehensive analysis of classical HLA class I SP variants and show that these can determine CD94/NKG2–HLA-E engagement.

Targeted small molecule inhibitors blocking the cytolytic effects of pneumolysin and homologous toxins

The pore-forming toxin pneumolysin is responsible for the high mortality seen in pneumococcal infections unresponsive to antibiotics. In this work, authors report a small molecule inhibitor targeting pneumolysin and related ones as an anti-virulence strategy protecting human cells during infection.
