Sepsis often induces liver injury, but the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms are still unclear. Here the authors show that gut neutrophils, assisted by intraepithelial lymphocytes, secrete neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) to activate Kupffer cells in the liver for producing inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF to contribute to liver damage.
