Endemism shapes viral ecology and evolution in globally distributed hydrothermal vent ecosystems

Viruses are pivotal players in deep-sea hydrothermal vents, shaping microbiomes by preying on key hosts. Through a global-scale analysis of vent viruses and their interactions, this study reveals that endemism is a key driver of viral ecology and evolution in these extreme ecosystems.

A seafloor microbial biome hosted within incipient ferromanganese crusts

Exposed rocks on underwater mountains and ridges host abundant and diverse microbial communities. X-ray and microscopic analyses of volcanic rocks associated with Loihi seamount in Hawaii suggest that seafloor microbes may commonly be sustained by energy inputs from the water column.
