  • The zoonotic pathogen Coxiella burnetiiestablishes a unique intracellular niche within a lysosome-derived vacuole. Here Bird et al. undertook proteomic, cell biology and microbiology approaches to characterise this niche and the strategies employed by C. burnetii to maintain a balance between intracellular success and maintaining host cell homoeostasis.

  • Wang et al show that microglial NF-κB activation is essential for tau spreading and tau-mediated spatial learning and memory deficits in tauopathy mice. Inactivation of NF-κB reversed tau associated microglial states and rescued autophagy deficits.

  • Regulated trafficking of major histocompatibility complex class II and CD86 is a prerequisite of antigen presenting cell functionality. Authors show here that ubiquitin-like protein 3 is critically involved in the ubiquitination process that controls trafficking, with wide-ranging immunological consequences.

  • Zeinab Ramashani, Chenguang Zhang et al. developed a microfluidic device that allows for quantification of extracellular vesicle (EV) microRNA from plasma. The platform does not require EV extraction, so it is able to process samples in as little as 30 minutes and requires much smaller volumes of sample than competing platforms.
