Root microorganisms can trigger the release of immune-stimulating N-hydroxypipecolic acid from Arabidopsis roots by manipulating a standby circuit of its continuous synthesis and immobilization. N-hydroxypipecolic acid thereby influences shoot growth and pathogen defence.
