Pancreatic microexons regulate islet function and glucose homeostasis

In this study, Juan-Mateu et al. discover microexons that modulate insulin secretion in the pancreas in response to glucose levels in beta cell lines and mouse islets. Human genetic variants modulating these islet microexons are associated with type 2 diabetes risk.

In silico RNA isoform screening to identify potential cancer driver exons with therapeutic applications

While alternative splicing is known to drive oncogenesis and be a source of potential therapeutic targets, identifying such drivers on a genome-wide scale has proven difficult. Here, the authors present a computational approach to identify potential cancer-driver exons and evaluate applicability as therapeutic targets.

Cancer-associated SF3B1 mutations affect alternative splicing by promoting alternative branchpoint usage

Mutations in the splicing factor SF3B1 are found in uveal melanoma. Here, Alsafadi et al. use RNA-sequencing data from these cancers and experimental models, and show that mutant SF3B1 promotes alternative branchpoints in a specific gene subset and that the mutant protein gains a new function.
