High-T_c superconductivity in ultrathin Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O_8+x down to half-unit-cell thickness by protection with graphene

So-called two-dimensional superconductivity has been reported in several material systems but just how thin a system can be and maintain a superconducting state has been difficult to determine. Da Jiang and colleagues demonstrate that Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+xcontinues to be superconducting even when it is just half a unit cell thick.

Electronic origin of high superconducting critical temperature in trilayer cuprates

Measurements of the electronic structure of a trilayer cuprate superconductor suggest that its high critical temperature is explained by the different doping levels of the layers. The combination of underdoped inner layer and overdoped outer layers supports superconductivity.

Strain-induced long-range charge-density wave order in the optimally doped Bi₂Sr_2−xLa_xCuO₆ superconductor

The authors study the optimally-doped cuprate superconductor Bi₂Sr_2−xLa_xCuO₆ by nuclear magnetic resonance. They find a long-range charge density wave (CDW) order induced by uniaxial strain, showing that CDW order is a hidden order of the pseudogap state, not limited to the underdoped regime.

Cilia-driven cerebrospinal fluid flow directs expression of urotensin neuropeptides to straighten the vertebrate body axis

In zebrafish, cilia-driven flow of cerebrospinal fluid transports adrenergic signals that induce urotensin neuropeptides in spinal cord neurons. In turn, these neuropeptides activate their receptor on nearby muscle fibers, straightening the body axis.
