Microbiome-emitted scents activate olfactory neuron-independent airway-gut-brain axis to promote host growth in Drosophila

Animals detect microbiomes through smell, aiding communication, group recognition, and behavior. Here with Drosophila model, the authors show that airway and gut cells can sense microbiome-emitted scents independently of smell, promoting host growth.

A therapeutic neutralizing antibody targeting receptor binding domain of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein

Therapies and vaccines for COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 viral pandemic, are urgently needed. Here the authors establish and screen an antibody library from a convalescent COVID-19 patient to isolate a neutralizing antibody with the ability to reduce viral titer and alleviate symptoms in ferret, hamster, and rhesus monkey infection models.

Interspecific bacterial sensing through airborne signals modulates locomotion and drug resistance

Microbes use small molecules to sense and communicate with other cells and species. Kim et al. now demonstrate that volatile compounds emitted by Bacillus subtilis can affect Escherichia colimotility and antibiotic resistance through activation of a conserved regulatory mechanism.

Loss-of-function gs3 allele decreases methane emissions and increases grain yield in rice

Rice paddies are a source of the potent greenhouse gas methane. The authors demonstrate that a rice variety containing naturally lost function in the gene GS3 has reduced allocation of photosynthates to roots, which results in a reduction of methane emissions during growth.
