Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a disease that irreversibly leads to loss of renal function. Here, the authors demonstrate the beneficial effect of intrinsic TGF-b signaling on mitochondrial function and inflammation in the proximal tubule epithelium in response to kidney injury.

Manganese(i) complexes with metal-to-ligand charge transfer luminescence and photoreactivity

Manganese(i) is isoelectronic to iron(ii) but has typically been overlooked as a cheap Earth-abundant metal for the development of 3d⁶ metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) emitters and photosensitizers. Now, using chelating isocyanide ligands, air-stable manganese(i) complexes have been obtained that exhibit MLCT luminescence, as well as energy- and electron-transfer photoreactivity.

The mitochondrial protein import machinery is crucial for eukaryotes but little is known about its evolutionary origin. Here, the authors characterize the translocase of the inner membrane (TIM) in trypanosomes, showing that it contains two rhomboid-like proteins essential for protein import.

ARAF recurrent mutation causes central conducting lymphatic anomaly treatable with a MEK inhibitor
