Lysozyme-coated nanoparticles for active uptake and delivery of synthetic RNA and plasmid-encoded genes in plants

This work describes protein-coated clay nanoparticles that are actively taken up by roots to deliver synthetic RNA and DNA-encoded genes into plants. The nanoparticles can also deliver functional nucleic acids directly into other plant tissues.

Foliar application of clay-delivered RNA interference for whitefly control

Foliar spray of double-stranded RNA carried on clay particles or BioClay affords protection against multiple life stages of whitefly in crop hosts. The sprayed dsRNA makes its way to the vasculature of plants and is taken up by whiteflies during feeding.

An integrated epigenomic analysis for type 2 diabetes susceptibility loci in monozygotic twins

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a highly heterogeneous disease with a strong genetic component. Here the authors examine genome-wide methylation patterns in T2D-discordant, T2D-concordant and healthy concordant monozygotic twin pairs, and identify DNA methylation signals that may represent new biomarkers or drug targets for T2D.

Movement and differential consumption of short interfering RNA duplexes underlie mobile RNA interference

Short interfering RNA (siRNA) can silence genes in neighbouring and distant plant cells. The authors show that transgenes, endogenous genes and viruses are silenced through the movement of free primary siRNA duplexes, which are progressively diluted and simultaneously selectively depleted during this process.

Assessing the phenotypic effects in the general population of rare variants in genes for a dominant Mendelian form of diabetes

David Altshuler and colleagues sequenced seven genes for maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY), a dominant Mendelian disorder, in 4,003 individuals drawn from three population-based cohorts. They find ~2% of individuals unselected for phenotype carry low frequency variants in one of these MODY genes, predicted as likely to be pathogenic; however most of these individuals remain asymptomatic through middle age.

ATFS-1 counteracts mitochondrial DNA damage by promoting repair over transcription

Dai et al. show that the transcription factor ATFS-1 interferes with mitochondrial pre-initiation transcription complex assembly and promotes mitochondrial DNA repair, thereby reducing age-dependent mitochondrial DNA damage in Caenorhabditis elegans.

An unbiased ranking of murine dietary models based on their proximity to human metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)

The LITMUS consortium provides a resource of rodent MASLD models benchmarked against metabolic, histologic and transcriptomic features that are relevant for human MASLD. The work is useful for selecting relevant rodent models for studying this common disease.
