  • In free radical polymerization, poorly connected nanoclusters lead to heterogeneous polymer networks with diminished mechanical properties. Now, a photogenerated nitroxide that couples propagating radicals during polymerization is reported, converting these otherwise unfavourable nanoclusters into robustly interconnected phases, thereby enhancing the network structure and improving mechanical performance.

  • Near-ambient superconductivity and pressure-driven color changes were recently reported in nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride. Here, the authors synthesize LuHxNy and do not confirm the superconductivity. In addition, they find that the color changes likely stem from pressure-induced electron redistribution of nitrogen and vacancies.

  • Hydrogels are promising materials but are often limited by inadequate mechanical properties and time-consuming fabrication processes. Here the authors demonstrate a rapid biomimetic interfacial-bonding nanocomposite strategy for ultra-tough hydrogels with high tensile strength.
