Intragenic recruitment of NF-κB drives splicing modifications upon activation by the oncogene Tax of HTLV-1

The nuclear factors κB (NF-κB) is a transcription factor involved in immune functions, inflammation, and cancer. Here, the authors show that the NF-κB factor RELA regulates splicing of target genes by recruiting DDX17 on chromatin upon expression of the viral oncogene Tax.

Myotonic dystrophy RNA toxicity alters morphology, adhesion and migration of mouse and human astrocytes

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is characterized by debilitating neurological symptoms. Dinca et al. demonstrate the pronounced impact of DM1 on the morphology and RNA metabolism of astrocytes. Their findings suggest astroglial pathology in DM1 brain dysfunction.

Splicing misregulation of SCN5A contributes to cardiac-conduction delay and heart arrhythmia in myotonic dystrophy

Patients with myotonic dystrophy (MD) suffer from severe cardiac issues of unknown aetiology. Freyermuth et al. show that fatal changes in cardiac electrophysiological properties in humans and mice with MD may arise from misregulation of the alternative splicing of the cardiac Na⁺ channel SCN5Atranscript, resulting in expression of its fetal form.

The multiple functions of RNA helicases as drivers and regulators of gene expression

RNA helicases can either remodel or lock the composition of messenger ribonucleoprotein complexes, and thus they have pleiotropic functions in the regulation of gene expression. RNA helicases can drive the progression of mRNAs between various RNA-processing factories, leading to protein synthesis or to mRNA storage or decay.
