The frequency, duration, and intensity of heatwaves in Africa increased during the recent period 1985–2014, largely driven by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, while the influence of internal variability decreased from 80% during 1950–1979 to 30% in 1985–2014, according to an analysis of a large model ensemble.
