Eva Simon et al. show non-linear responses and non-additive interactive effects of climate change on microbial physiology, but not on microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE). These findings suggest that future research should focus on microbial growth instead of CUE alone to understand and predict effects of global changes on soil carbon dynamics.
