Nearest-neighbour resonating valence bonds in YbMgGaO₄

The signature of short range resonating valence bonds (RVB) to understand quantum spin liquids is yet to be explored. Here, Liet al. observe the putative RVB correlations restricted to nearest neighbours in YbMgGaO₄, responsible for the high-energy spin excitations.

Compass-model physics on the hyperhoneycomb lattice in the extreme spin-orbit regime

Two-dimensional honeycomb lattices of magnetic ions with strong spin-orbit coupling can host a rich variety of magnetic phases, including Kitaev quantum spin liquids. Here, Okuma et al succeeded in synthesising powders and single crystals of β-Na2PrO3, with Praseodymium ions with very strong spin-orbit coupling arranged in a three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb lattice.

Emergent many-body composite excitations of interacting spin-1/2 trimers

It was recently predicted that, in addition to well-known spinon excitations, a 1D spin-trimer chain with periodic exchange couplings hosts novel composite excitations. Bera et al. experimentally demonstrate and characterize such excitations, termed doublons and quartons, in a spin-trimer compound Na₂Cu₃Ge₄O₁₂.
