Plasmodium malariae can cause chronic asymptomatic infections. Here, Ibrahim and colleagues provide WGS data for > 200 P. malariae isolates. Describing mutations in genes associated with drug resistance, and using ortholog replacement in P. knowlesi, they identify dhfr genotypes with reduced susceptibility to pyrimethamine.
