Hayday and colleagues show that sustained Skint1-dependent interactions between murine intraepidermal γδ T cells and keratinocytes are required to maintain the homeostatic barrier function and phenotype of the intraepidermal γδ T cells, including their preparedness to respond appropriately to epidermal challenges.

Butyrophilin-like proteins display combinatorial diversity in selecting and maintaining signature intraepithelial γδ T cell compartments

Butyrophilin-like genes are emerging as central to tissue associated γδ T cell compartments. Here, the authors show that the butyropilin-like gene-products exert their effects as combinatorially diverse heteromers that differentially affect the selection and maintenance of skin-resident and gut-resident intraepithelial γδ T-cell populations.

High-throughput phenotyping reveals expansive genetic and structural underpinnings of immune variation

The International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) aims to identify the function of all protein-coding genes in the mouse genome. Hayday and colleagues leverage 530 knockout lines from the IPMC to develop the 3i Project, which immunophenotypes mice and leads to the identification of new and unexpected gene influences on immune function and on the structural organization of the immune system.
