This Review describes the mechanisms by which dietary, hormonal and metabolic factors regulate the expression and function of sodium-dependent phosphate cotransporters. The authors discuss the consequences of dysregulated phosphate transport and how understanding of the structure–function relationships of the transporters provides insights into their transport mechanisms.
