Although the Grotthuss mechanism of proton transfer is generally considered to be the most efficient means of proton transport, the search for experimental evidence of the mechanism has remained elusive and in certain cases confusing. Here, dielectric spectroscopy, quasieleastic neutron and light scattering, along with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations have been utilized to elucidate the mechanism of proton transfer in pure and 85% aqueous phosphoric acid.
