  • Nanocrystal growth by oriented attachment remains poorly understood, despite being a prevalent pathway in geochemical, materials synthesis, and biomineral systems. Here, the authors show that zinc oxide nanocrystals grow by oriented attachment along the (001) plane driven by dipole-dipole interactions that align the particles at long distances prior to their collision and fusion.

  • This study shows in lab experiments that weathering of microplastics enhances their ability to act as ice-nucleating particles. Sunlight exposure alters their surface properties, increasing water uptake and promoting ice nucleation under atmospheric conditions.

  • Non-classical crystallization may proceed through formation of intermediate phases, but it is not known whether these are linked to the final crystallization. Here, using an atomic force microscope at 90 bar, brucite carbonation is directly observed, with an amorphous intermediate acting as the seed for crystalline nesquehonite.
