Interferon-λ modulates dendritic cells to facilitate T cell immunity during infection with influenza A virus

IFN-λ has important innate immune system functions at mucosal surfaces, but its importance in adaptive immunity is largely unknown. Using an influenza infection model, Gale and colleagues demonstrate that IFN-λ is essential for effective adaptive cellular immunity in the lung.

This study highlights that IFITM3 deficiency lowers the minimum infectious dose of influenza virus, enhances adaptation of influenza viruses to a new host species, and broadly increases infection of human cells by avian and swine influenza viruses.

Gasdermin D promotes influenza virus-induced mortality through neutrophil amplification of inflammation

Gasdermin D (GSDMD) is a pore forming protein activated by inflammasome derived caspases. Here the authors characterize the function of GSDMD in mouse influenza virus infection and show that immunopathology is reduced in the absence of GSDMD and involves changes in neutrophil function.

IFN-λ 'guts' neutrophil-mediated inflammation

Interferon-λ (IFN-λ) curbs neutrophil-mediated intestinal inflammation by diminishing the production of reactive oxygen species and subsequent oxidative stress. This regulatory process is unique to IFN-λ and is independent of interferon-induced transcription and translation programs.
