α-catenin switches between a slip and an asymmetric catch bond with F-actin to cooperatively regulate cell junction fluidity

By using laser tweezers, the authors show that a single α-catenin molecule does not resist force on F-actin. However, clustering of multiple molecules and force applied toward F-actin pointed end engage a molecular switch in α-catenin, which unfolds and strongly binds F-actin.

Nanoscale sub-100 picosecond all-optical magnetization switching in GdFeCo microstructures

All-optical magnetization switching holds significant potential for future ultrafast high-density recording applications. Here, Le Guyader et al.demonstrate sub-100 ps sub-wavelength magnetization reversal by passive focussing of a single femtosecond laser pulse in micro-patterned GdFeCo thin films.

Accelerated evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in free-ranging white-tailed deer

White-tailed deer are an important reservoir of SARS-CoV-2 in the USA and continued monitoring of the virus in deer populations is needed. In this genomic epidemiology study from Ohio, the authors show that the virus has been introduced multiple times to deer from humans, and that it has evolved faster in deer.

Ultrafast heating as a sufficient stimulus for magnetization reversal in a ferrimagnet

The dynamics of spin ordering in magnetic materials is of interest both from a fundamental and an applied point of view. Using a combination of numerical and experimental techniques, Ostleret al. show that the magnetization of a ferrimagnet can be reversed on a timescale of picoseconds solely by heating it.

Correlation-temperature phase diagram of prototypical infinite layer rare earth nickelates

Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite layer nickelates, the authors study the correlation and temperature phase diagram of LaNiO₂ and NdNiO₂, using embedded DMFT combined with DFT. Their study offers insight into the low-energy physics of the paramagnetic and magnetic states, shedding some light on the mechanism of superconductivity and lack of magnetic order in these systems.

Quantum tunnelling of the magnetization in a monolayer of oriented single-molecule magnets

Single-molecule magnets are molecular complexes with magnetic bistability, and recently it was shown that such a magnetic memory effect is retained for Fe₄ clusters when they are wired to a gold surface. These authors have tailored the clusters to have a preferential orientation and form a self-assembled monolayer on the surface. It then becomes possible to observe quantum tunnelling of the magnetization, which shows up as steps in the magnetic hysteresis loop.
